FAQ

Q: What is a GIA Diamond Grading Report?

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), issues Diamond Grading Reports which are a complete technical description of a diamond as it is loose, prior to being mounted in the setting. GIA does not assign any monetary value to the diamond, just specific measurements and quality grades, which are useful when identifying a particular diamond. Diamond Grading Reports are often incorrectly called a "certificate".

Q: What is a Triple Ex diamond?

Diamonds with exceptional scintillation possess the best cut grade as well as highly symmetrical facets and high quality polish. To find diamonds with the best sparkle effect, focus your efforts on GIA certificated diamonds that are Triple Excellent (Triple Ex). Triple Ex diamonds have excellent cut, excellent polish and excellent symmetry.

Q: What is the quality of the pave diamonds used in your pave ring mountings? What does "color H/I and clarity VS/SI" mean?

A: In our pave engagement ring mountings, we use diamonds that are graded with color "H/I" and clarity "VS/SI."

Diamonds can come in all colors. We use diamonds with color "H/I" on our pave ring mountings which means we use colors in the range of "H" to "I." "H" and "I" are not acronyms. Rather, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has devised a color scale, ranging alphabetically from "D" (colorless) to "Z" (yellow). Each letter grade represents a small range of color, and not just a single color. This GIA color scale is recognized world-wide. Under this GIA color scale, "H" and "I" fall under the "near colorless" range. Thus, "H" and "I" appear colorless in the face up position but display a slight amount of color in the face down against a white background. The only difference between the colors "H" and "I" is that the color "I" would show slightly more color than "H."

Clarity refers to the presence or absence of impurities of a diamond. "Inclusions" refers to the internal flaws of a diamond. "Inclusions" cannot be seen without magnification. Diamonds are unique because no two diamonds have the same inclusion in the same location. On our pave ring mountings, we use diamonds with clarity "VS/SI," which means clarity in the range of "VS1" to "SI2." "VS1" means "very slightly included" and these minor inclusions range from difficult to easily visible under magnification. "SI2" means "slightly included" and these inclusions are easily visible under magnification. Therefore, "VS1" has better clarity than "SI2."

In short, our pave engagement ring mountings include melee diamonds with "color H/I and clarity VS/SI" and are less than 0.15 carats each.

For more information on diamond color and clarity see the Diamond Buyers Guide.

Q: What is a melee diamond?

The small diamonds we use in our pave engagement ring mountings are often referred to as melee (meh-lee) diamonds. Melee diamonds is used to describe small diamonds. The diamond weight for melee diamonds range from as low as 0.001 carats (1000th/carat) to 0.18 carats.

Q: What is the JewelsBoutique.com return policy?

JewelsBoutique.com offers a 30-day no-risk return policy.

Q: I already have my ring, how can I tell which diamonds will work with it?

If you already have a ring mounting (semi-mount), you’ll need two pieces of information to begin shopping for a matching diamond (size and shape). The size of diamond that your ring can accommodate is determined by the prong spacing. If you don’t have the prong spacing, most jewelers will measure it for you. Ask for not only the prong measurement, but also an estimate in carat size and the diamond shapes that will work with your ring. With carat size estimate and diamond shape, you’ve got all the information necessary to go diamond shopping.
